    AROUND MOUNT ETNA

    Around Mount Etna

A Volcanic Circuit of Fire and Flavor

This 150 km loop circumnavigates Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, blending lava fields, medieval villages, and Sicilian culinary gems. Begin and end in Catania, with Etna’s smoldering peak as your constant companion.

Begin in Catania’s Piazza del Duomo, a Baroque UNESCO site. Fuel up and grab a cannolo before heading north toward Etna.

    Key Stops & Highlights

    1. Randazzo. A medieval town built from black lava stone. Visit the Museo Vulcanologico and Santa Maria Church.
    2. Rifugio Sapienza. Base for Etna’s southern slopes. Ride the Funivia dell’Etna cable car (€30) to 2,500m, then hike or take a 4x4 tour to summit craters (weather permitting).
    3. Silvestri Craters. Walk around these dormant 1892 craters. Easy trails with panoramic views of the Valle del Bove.
    4. Zafferana Etnea. The “Honey Capital” of Etna. Taste miele di castagno (chestnut honey) and visit the Museo della Montagna for volcanic history.
    5. Piano Provenzana. Etna’s northern base, rebuilt after the 2002 eruption. Hike lava trails or horseback ride through birch forests.
    6. Linguaglossa. A wine hub. Tour vineyards like Tenuta delle Terre Nere and sample Etna Rosso wines.
    7. Alcantara Gorge. Walk the Gole Alcantara, a stunning canyon carved by icy river waters through ancient lava.
    8. Bronte. Home to Pistacchio Verde di Bronte (DOP pistachios). Stop at a pasticceria for pistachio gelato or pesto.

End your drive with a sunset aperitivo in Catania’s Via Etnea, with Mount Etna glowing in the distance.

    Tips

    • Roads: Narrow, winding mountain roads (SS120, SP92). Avoid summer crowds and winter snow.
    • Safety: Check Etna’s activity at INGV (linked below). Summit access closes during eruptions.
    • Eats: Try pasta alla Norma (eggplant, ricotta salata) and arancini in Catania.
