    THE ADRIATIC ROAD

    The Adriatic Road

    A Coastal Odyssey

Spanning 170 km along the glittering Adriatic Sea, this route connects Croatia’s medieval gem, Dubrovnik, to Montenegro’s multicultural haven, Ulcinj. The journey winds through fjord-like bays, Venetian-era towns, and beaches lapped by turquoise waters.

Begin in Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” Walk the ancient city walls or ride the cable car to Mount Srđ for panoramic views before heading south on the D8 coastal road.

    Key Stops & Highlights

    1. Cavtat. A serene seaside town with Renaissance palaces and the Vlaho Bukovac Gallery. Stroll the palm-lined promenade or swim at Pasjača Beach.
    2. Montenegro Border Crossing. Stop at the Debeli Brijeg crossing (have passports ready). Switch from Croatian kuna to euros.
    3. Herceg Novi. A flower-filled town with the 14th-century Kanli Kula Fortress. Sip Montenegrin wine at a cliffside café.
    4. Bay of Kotor. Navigate the serpentine road around Europe’s southernmost fjord. Highlights:
    5. Perast: Visit the Our Lady of the Rocks islet.
    6. Kotor Old Town: A UNESCO site with labyrinthine alleys and the San Giovanni Fortress climb.
    7. Budva. Montenegro’s party capital. Lounge at Mogren Beach or explore the Budva Riviera’s nightlife.
    8. Sveti Stefan. A 15th-century island-villa turned luxury resort. Park at Queen’s Beach for photos of its iconic causeway.
    9. Bar. Explore Stari Bar, a ruined Ottoman-era town, or tour the 2,500-year-old Old Olive Tree.

Finish in Ulcinj, where Albanian, Montenegrin, and Turkish cultures blend. Wander the Old Town (Ulcinj’s answer to Dubrovnik), swim at Long Beach (12 km of sand), or watch sunset from the Balšić Tower.

    Tips for the Drive

    • Border Wait Times: Cross early to avoid summer queues.
    • Road Conditions: Narrow coastal stretches; avoid speeding on Montenegro’s serpentine curves.
    • Season: May–Sept for swimming; spring/fall for fewer crowds.
    • Detours: Add Lovćen National Park (via Kotor Serpentine) or Lake Skadar for birdwatching.
