    WACHAU VALLEY

    Wachau Valley

A Danube River Wine & Castle Odyssey

Spanning 40 km (25 miles) along the Danube River in Austria, the Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for terraced vineyards, medieval castles, and apricot orchards. This scenic route blends history, wine culture, and breathtaking river views.

Begin in Krems, a historic wine town with cobblestone streets and the Kunstmeile Krems art district. Fuel up here, services are sparse in smaller villages.

    Key Stops & Highlights

    1. Dürnstein. Dürnstein Castle Ruins: Hike to the hilltop fortress where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. Blue Church: A baroque gem with a striking blue-and-white tower. Local Wineries: Sample Riesling and Grüner Veltliner at family-run Heurigen (wine taverns).
    2. Weissenkirchen. Wachau Museum: Explore the valley’s wine-making history in a 16th-century church fortress. Tegernseerhof Winery: Sip award-winning wines in a 12th-century cellar.
    3. Spitz. Tausendeimerberg Vineyard: Named “Hill of a Thousand Buckets” for its prolific grape yields. Burgruine Hinterhaus: Climb to ruins overlooking the Danube’s “Spitzer Graben” bend.
    4. Melk. Melk Abbey: A baroque masterpiece perched above the Danube. Tour its golden library and frescoed halls. Abbey Park: Stroll formal gardens with panoramic valley views.

Conclude in Melk, where the valley meets the foothills of the Alps. Cross the Danube to explore Aggstein Castle Ruins or continue to Vienna (80 km east).
