    LAND OF CASTLES

    Land of Castles

A Bohemian Road Trip Through Czech History

This 450-kilometer loop through the Czech Republic’s "Land of Castles" weaves through fairy-tale fortresses, Baroque châteaux, and medieval towns. From Gothic spires to Renaissance gardens, this route immerses you in Central Europe’s regal heritage.

    Starting & Ending Location: Prague

Begin in Prague, the capital, where the Vltava River winds past Prague Castle. Fuel up and rent a car here for your journey into Bohemia’s countryside.

    Key Stops & Highlights

    1. Konopiště Castle. A lavish hunting château once owned by Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Stroll the manicured gardens and see the world’s largest collection of St. George-themed art.
    2. Český Šternberk Castle. A cliffside medieval fortress still owned by the Sternberg family. Tour its Gothic halls and armor exhibits.
    3. Kutná Hora. Detour to this UNESCO town for the Sedlec Ossuary (Bone Church) and St. Barbara’s Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece.
    4. Hluboká Castle. A white Neo-Gothic château inspired by England’s Windsor Castle. Wander its opulent interiors and English-style gardens.
    5. Český Krumlov. A UNESCO World Heritage town with a hilltop castle complex. Climb the Castle Tower for panoramic views of the Vltava’s serpentine bends.
    6. Karlštejn Castle. A 14th-century Gothic fortress built by Emperor Charles IV to safeguard royal treasures. Climb to the Great Tower for views of the Bohemian countryside.

Complete the loop with a scenic drive through the Šumava foothills, stopping in Tábor (a Hussite history hub) or Písek (home to Europe’s oldest stone bridge).

    Tips for the Drive

    • Roads: Well-maintained but narrow in villages. Purchase a Czech motorway vignette (available online).
    • Castle Hours: Many close Mondays or off-season (Oct–Apr). Book guided tours in advance.
    • Eats: Try svíčková (beef in cream sauce) in castle restaurants or trdelník (chimney cake) in towns.
    • Pass: Save with a Czech Heritage Pass for castle entries.
