A Scottish Royal Escape Through Castles, Mountains, and Glens
This 92 km route winds through Aberdeenshire’s most regal landscapes, following the River Dee from Aberdeen to the edge of the Cairngorms. Steeped in royal history, wild scenery, and whisky charm, Royal Deeside is a favorite retreat of the British Royal Family.
Begin in Aberdeen, Scotland’s “Granite City.” Fuel up and stock up on snacks before heading west on the A93.
Key Stops & Highlights
- Crathes Castle & Gardens. A 16th-century tower house with turrets, frescoed ceilings, and manicured gardens. Walk the Dragon Trail for family-friendly folklore.
- Banchory. Stop for coffee at The Bothy or hike the Scolty Hill Trail for panoramic views of Deeside.
- Ballater. The gateway to Balmoral Castle (summer home of the Royal Family). Tour the castle grounds (Apr–Jul) or hike Loch Muick for wild Highland scenery. Pop into the Royal Station, restored to its Victorian glory.
- Braemar. End in this picturesque village, home to Braemar Castle and the famed Braemar Gathering (Highland Games in September). Detour to Linn of Dee (8 km west) for waterfalls and Cairngorms National Park trails.
The drive concludes in Braemar, but adventurers can extend into the Cairngorms for hiking, skiing (winter), or wildlife spotting (red deer, golden eagles).
Tips for the Drive
- Roads: Narrow and winding in places; watch for cyclists and sheep.
- Season: May–Sept for castle access and hiking; winter for snow sports and cozy pubs.
- Whisky: Sample local drams at Royal Lochnagar Distillery (near Balmoral).
