Key Stops

Rouen - Your starting point and one of the largest cities in medieval Europe. This historic city is where Joan of Arc met her tragic end. Pick up the D982 heading west to begin your abbey trail.

St.-Martin-de-Boscherville - Home to the magnificent Abbaye de St.-Georges, a Romanesque masterpiece featuring a simple yet stunning interior with a beautifully carved apse. Don't miss the remains of the 12th-century chapterhouse with its superbly carved capitals.

Duclair - Pause at this riverside town for fine views of the Seine before forking left onto the D65 detour.

Le Mesnil-sous-Jumièges - A charming old village surrounded by apple and cherry orchards. Follow the meandering river and watch for the great towers of Jumièges rising above the distant trees.

Abbaye de Jumièges - The atmospheric ruins of one of Normandy's most important monasteries. Founded in A.D. 654, raided by Vikings in the ninth century, and brought to ruin during the French Revolution, only the two magnificent 11th-century towers and part of the nave remain—a haunting testament to its turbulent past.

Abbaye de St.-Wandrille - Nestled in the Fontenelle Valley, this abbey was founded in the seventh century by St. Wandrille himself. Explore the restored 14th-century cloister and the atmospheric ruins of the 13th-14th century Gothic church. In the 1960s, monks established a new church within a 15th-century wooden tithe barn. Guided tours are available, and if you appreciate Gregorian chant, time your visit for a sung Mass.

Caudebec-en-Caux - A picturesque riverside town boasting a fine 15th-century church. An ideal spot for a leisurely stroll along the Seine.

Villequier - Visit the Musée Victor Hugo, dedicated to the great French literary figure. Housed in the writer's former home, the museum displays memorabilia chronicling his remarkable life.
