Big Bend’s Desert Majesty

Winding through Big Bend National Park’s starkly beautiful Chihuahuan Desert, the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive (30 miles one-way) showcases towering cliffs, volcanic formations, and the mighty Rio Grande. This paved route offers a front-row seat to the park’s geologic drama and Wild West history.

Begin at Panther Junction Visitor Center, the park’s main hub. Fuel up in nearby Study Butte or Terlingua, no services exist along the drive.

Key Stops & Highlights

1. Sotol Vista. A panoramic overlook of the desert basin and distant Chisos Mountains. Sunrise and sunset paint the landscape in fiery hues.
2. Mule Ears Viewpoint. Photograph the iconic twin volcanic peaks resembling mule ears. The short Mule Ears Spring Trail leads to a historic tinaja (rock pool).
3. Sam Nail Ranch. Explore ruins of a 1900s homestead shaded by cottonwoods. A windmill still draws water, attracting birds and wildlife.
4. Castolon Historic District. Step back in time at this 1901 Army outpost turned trading post. Visit the Castolon Visitor Center and grab snacks at the La Harmonia Store.
5. Santa Elena Canyon. The drive’s crown jewel: 1,500-foot limestone cliffs towering over the Rio Grande. Hike the Santa Elena Canyon Trail (1.7 miles) into the canyon’s cool, echoing depths.

The road ends at the Santa Elena Canyon parking lot. From here, the trail leads to the riverbank, where Mexico’s cliffs rise across the water.

Tips for the Drive

• Road Conditions: Paved but remote carry water, food, and a full gas tank.
• Entry Fee: $30 per vehicle (valid 7 days) or use an America the Beautiful Pass.
• Wildlife: Spot roadrunners, javelinas, and golden eagles.
• Season: Fall to spring (Oct–Apr) to avoid scorching summer heat.
