150 Miles of Lake Superior's Wildest American Shore

Minnesota's North Shore is the wildest American shoreline of Lake Superior, a 150-mile stretch from Duluth at the lake's southwestern tip to the Canadian border at Grand Portage. The drive follows MN-61 (an All-American Road) along the toe of the Sawtooth Mountains, a 50-mile range of billion-year-old volcanic rock rising 500 to 1,500 feet directly from the lake. Every river along the route drops over a series of waterfalls as it tumbles from the Sawtooth highlands to Lake Superior, producing one of the most concentrated waterfall landscapes in the contiguous United States. Lake Superior itself is the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area (31,700 square miles), containing 10 percent of all the surface fresh water on Earth, and is so vast it creates its own weather: the most famous victim of its November gales was the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, lost in 1975 with all 29 hands and immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot's song. The drive crosses eight state parks, the Superior National Forest (3 million acres), and the territory of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. In fall the inland ridges blaze with maple and birch; in winter, the waterfalls freeze into 100-foot ice columns.

Key Stops

Duluth (Start) The world's farthest-inland port for oceangoing ships, reaching Lake Superior via the 2,300-mile St. Lawrence Seaway. The 1905 Aerial Lift Bridge rises 138 feet vertically to let freighters pass; the deck rises and lowers about 5,000 times a year. Key stops: Canal Park with the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center (free), the 7.5-mile Lakewalk, Glensheen Mansion (1908 Jacobean estate), and Hawk Ridge (one of North America's premier raptor migration sites; 33,000 raptors recorded in a single October day). Full services.

Two Harbors Minnesota's first iron-ore port (1884). The Two Harbors Lighthouse (1892) is the state's oldest operating lighthouse, with a B&B in the keeper's quarters. The ornate Edna G tugboat (1896, National Historic Landmark) is moored at the harbor. Betty's Pies has been a roadside institution since 1956.

Gooseberry Falls State Park Minnesota's most-visited state park (700,000+ visitors annually). The Gooseberry River drops through five waterfalls in 1.5 miles. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls (30, 30, and 60 feet) are accessible by paved trails. Agate Beach at the river mouth offers rockhounding for Lake Superior agates, Minnesota's state gemstone. Day pass $7.

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Minnesota's most iconic site: a 1910 octagonal brick lighthouse on a 130-foot cliff, built in response to the November 1905 Mataafa Storm that wrecked 29 ships across Lake Superior. The historic 1969 light is relit only on November 10 for the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Lighting. Lighthouse tours $12 per adult. The 2,200-acre park has cliff-edge camping.

Palisade Head and Tettegouche State Park Palisade Head is a 350-foot rhyolite cliff jutting into Lake Superior with sunrise views and world-class rock climbing. Tettegouche (9,346 acres) protects six inland lakes, four major waterfalls including High Falls (80 feet), and 23 miles of trails. The historic Tettegouche Lodge (1910 log cabins) offers the most wilderness-feeling overnight on the drive.

Temperance River State Park The Temperance River drops through a slot canyon barely wide enough to fall through, plunging into deep stone "potholes" carved by spinning rocks over thousands of years. Short trails from the parking area follow the gorge through dramatic waterfalls.

Tofte and the Sawbill Trail The lakeside village of Tofte has the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum (free; in restored 1920s fishing shacks). The Sawbill Trail heads 24 miles inland to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the most-visited federal wilderness in the US (1,200 miles of canoe routes; permits required).

Lutsen Minnesota's premier mountain resort, with Lutsen Mountains Ski Area (largest in the Midwest, 95 runs, 1,088-foot vertical drop). In summer, the Mountain Tram Gondola carries sightseers up Moose Mountain for panoramic views. Lutsen Resort on Lake Superior (founded 1885) is the oldest resort in Minnesota.

Cascade River State Park The Cascade River drops 900 feet in its final 3 miles to Lake Superior, with five major waterfalls. CCC-era stone trails and bridges through the gorge are among the most beautiful on the North Shore. The 13-mile Cascade River Loop is one of the finest day hikes in Minnesota.

Grand Marais The North Shore's cultural heart, a French-named harbor town (population 1,300) with art galleries, restaurants, and outdoor outfitters. Key sites: Grand Marais Harbor with its iconic lighthouses, Artist's Point (popular sunset spot), the North House Folk School (traditional Scandinavian crafts), and Sven and Ole's Pizza. The Gunflint Trail heads 57 miles inland to the BWCAW. Lodging fills months in advance for summer and foliage season.

Judge C.R. Magney State Park (Devil's Kettle) The famous Devil's Kettle is a unique waterfall where the Brule River splits in two: half drops 50 feet over a normal cascade, while the other half disappears into a giant rock cauldron whose outlet was a mystery for decades. A 2017 hydrology study proved the water simply rejoins the river underground, but the kettle remains hypnotic. A 1-mile trail with stairs reaches the viewing platform.

Grand Portage National Monument The drive's final stop, preserving the most important fur-trade depot in 18th-century North America. From the 1730s to 1803, Grand Portage ("the Great Carrying Place") was the inland headquarters of the North West Company, where 800+ voyageurs and Ojibwe traders gathered each summer. The reconstructed Great Hall and palisade are operated by the NPS in partnership with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Free admission. Ferry departures to Isle Royale National Park (one of America's least-visited national parks) operate May–October. At nearby Grand Portage State Park, the Pigeon River drops 120 feet at High Falls, the tallest waterfall entirely in Minnesota, marking the US-Canada border.

Driving Tips

  • Allow 3 to 5 days with stops. Major overnight bases: Duluth, Two Harbors, Tofte/Lutsen, Grand Marais (1–2 nights).
  • MN-61 is fully paved two-lane highway throughout. Watch for moose and deer at dawn and dusk.
  • Minnesota State Parks require a $7 daily or $35 annual pass.
  • Cell coverage is reliable in towns but spotty along much of the corridor. Download offline maps.
  • Reserve lodging months ahead for summer weekends and fall foliage season (late September–early October).
  • Lake Superior is dangerously cold year-round (35–55°F). Swim only at designated beaches in warm conditions.
  • Fall foliage peaks late September inland, early October along the shore.
  • Winter is spectacular: frozen waterfalls become 100-foot ice towers, the aurora borealis is visible on clear nights, and Lutsen offers the Midwest's best skiing. MN-61 is plowed year-round; winter tires required November–April.
  • Boundary Waters access from the Gunflint or Sawbill Trail requires permits (lottery on recreation.gov starting January 31).
  • Isle Royale ferries from Grand Portage operate May–October; reserve well in advance.
