A Journey Through England’s Lakes & Fells

Spanning 115 km through England’s UNESCO-listed Lake District National Park, this scenic loop combines shimmering lakes, rugged fells, and literary landmarks. From Wordsworth’s poetry to adrenaline-piking mountain passes, here’s your guide:

Begin in Windermere, the largest town in the Lake District. Fuel up and grab maps at the Brockhole Visitor Centre before heading north.

Key Stops & Highlights

  1. Bowness-on-Windermere. Take a Windermere Lake Cruise or stroll the shores of England’s longest lake. Visit the World of Beatrix Potter for a whimsical tribute to Peter Rabbit.
  2. Ambleside. Hike to Stock Ghyll Force, a 21m waterfall, or explore the Roman fort ruins at Galava. Fuel up at cozy cafés like The Apple Pie.
  3. Grasmere. Pay homage to Wordsworth at Dove Cottage and his grave in St. Oswald’s Churchyard. Buy buttery Grasmere gingerbread from the 1854 Sarah Nelson’s Shop.
  4. Keswick & Derwentwater. Walk the Friar’s Crag viewpoint or rent a rowboat on Derwentwater. Explore the quirky Pencil Museum (birthplace of graphite pencils).
  5. Honister Pass. Drive England’s steepest road pass (25% gradient) with views of Fleetwith Pike. Tour the Honister Slate Mine or brave the via ferrata climb.
  6. Ullswater. Cruise the lake on a vintage Ullswater Steamer or hike Aira Force, a 20m waterfall.
  7. Kirkstone Pass. Return via the Lake District’s highest pass (454m) to Windermere. Stop at the Kirkstone Pass Inn (16th-century pub).

Complete the loop back in Windermere or extend your trip to Coniston Water (20 km west) for Swallows and Amazons adventures.

Tips for the Drive

  • Roads: Narrow, winding lanes—drive cautiously and use passing places.
  • Parking: Pre-book in towns like Keswick (limited spaces).
  • Weather: Changeable—pack layers and waterproofs, even in summer.
  • Season: May–Sept for wildflowers; autumn for golden foliage.
