A Historic Alpine Adventure
Spanning 80 km through the Swiss and Italian Alps, the Great St. Bernard Pass (Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard) is one of Europe’s oldest and most storied mountain routes. Famous for its hospice, rescue dogs, and breathtaking vistas, this seasonal road (open June–October) connects Switzerland’s Valais to Italy’s Aosta Valley.
Begin in Martigny, a Swiss town at the foot of the Alps. Fuel up and visit Barryland (St. Bernard Dog Museum) to meet the iconic rescue dogs before ascending.
Key Stops & Highlights
- Bourg-Saint-Pierre. The last Swiss village before the pass. Visit the 12th-century Saint-Pierre Church and stock up on provisions.
- Hospice du Grand-St-Bernard. At 2,469 meters, this 1,000-year-old monastery-turned-hostel housed monks and their rescue dogs. Tour the Hospice Museum and hike around the frozen lake (even in summer!).
- Great St. Bernard Lake & Pass Summit. Stop at the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard (2,469 m) for panoramic views of the Alps. The lake here is often ice-covered until July.
- Col des Planards. A scenic viewpoint overlooking the Italian Alps. Spot ibex and marmots in summer.
- Aosta, Italy. End in Aosta, a Roman-era town with ruins like the Arch of Augustus and the Alpine Botanical Garden.
From Aosta, extend your trip to Turin or the Matterhorn via the A5 motorway.
Tips for the Drive
- Road Conditions: Narrow, winding, and steep (max 9% gradient). Trailers prohibited.
- Season: Open June–October; check for snow closures. The Great St. Bernard Tunnel (paid) is a year-round alternative.
- Wildlife: Watch for marmots, ibex, and the legendary St. Bernard dogs at the hospice.
- Weather: Rapid changes—pack layers even in summer.
