Great Lakes Seaway Trail

An 800 km Journey Along Freshwater Shores & Historic Waterways
Spanning the shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River, the Great Lakes Seaway Trail is a National Scenic Byway steeped in maritime history, lighthouses, and dramatic waterfront vistas. This route blends natural beauty, quaint villages, and Revolutionary War landmarks.
Begin near the Pennsylvania-New York border at Lake Erie’s Presque Isle State Park, known for sandy beaches and migratory birdwatching.
Key Stops & Highlights
- Buffalo. Buffalo Harbor: Tour the 1871 Buffalo Lighthouse and naval parks. Canalside District: Revitalized waterfront with kayaking and ice-skating (winter).
- Niagara Falls. Detour to the iconic falls. Walk the Cave of the Winds boardwalk or cruise the Maid of the Mist.
- Rochester. Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse: Climb for views of Lake Ontario. Ontario Beach Park: Stroll the historic 1905 carousel and pier.
- Sodus Bay. A charming harbor town with the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum and sailboat rentals.
- Sackets Harbor. A War of 1812 battlefield site. Visit the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site and lakeside cafes.
- Thousand Islands Region. Wellesley Island State Park: Hike or fish along the St. Lawrence River. Alexandria Bay: Board a boat tour to Boldt Castle on Heart Island
The trail concludes near the Eisenhower Lock, part of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Cross into Canada or explore the Robert Moses State Park’s hydropower dam.
Tips for the Drive
- Season: May–October for warm weather and open attractions; fall for foliage.
- Road Conditions: Mostly paved, with some rural two-lane stretches.
- Wildlife: Watch for bald eagles, waterfowl, and white-tailed deer.
- Permits: Some parks require entry fees (5–5–10).
