A Dramatic Canyon Adventure in Southern France

Carved by the Tarn River through limestone cliffs, the Gorges du Tarn is a 53-kilometer route through one of Europe’s most breathtaking canyons. This winding road (D907bis/D996) offers vertiginous vistas, medieval villages, and outdoor adventures in France’s Occitanie region. Here’s your guide:

Begin in Sainte-Enimie, a medieval village clinging to the cliffs. Park near the 12th-century abbey, fuel up, and grab fresh goat cheese or chestnut treats from local producers.

Key Stops & Highlights

  1. Château de la Caze. A 15th-century castle-turned-hotel perched above the river. Stop for lunch on the terrace or explore its Renaissance-era architecture.
  2. Cirque des Baumes. A natural amphitheater of limestone cliffs. Spot rock climbers scaling the walls or hike the Pas de Soucy trail to see giant boulders blocking the river.
  3. Les Vignes. A riverside village with cafes and canoe rentals. Paddle the Tarn’s emerald waters to see the gorge from below.
  4. Point Sublime. A jaw-dropping viewpoint overlooking the Tarn’s serpentine bends. Walk the short trail to the edge for photos of the canyon’s sheer 500-meter walls.
  5. Le Rozier. End in Le Rozier, where the Tarn meets the Jonte River. Hike to Rocher de Capluc for sunset views or venture into the Gorges de la Jonte for vulture-spotting.

Optional Detours

  • Aven Armand Cave: A 45-minute drive from Le Rozier. Descend 100+ meters into a cavern filled with 400 stalagmites.
  • Millau Viaduct: 30 km south of Le Rozier. Marvel at the world’s tallest bridge (343 meters high), spanning the Tarn Valley.

Tips for the Drive

  • Road Conditions: Narrow, winding, and prone to summer traffic. Avoid July–August crowds if possible.
  • Season: Spring (April–June) for wildflowers; autumn (Sept–Oct) for golden foliage.
  • Parking: Limited in villages arrive early.
  • Wildlife: Griffon vultures soar above the cliffs; otters and trout thrive in the Tarn.
