Spanning 150 km from Manhattan to Cassoday, this one-way journey through Kansas’ Flint Hills immerses you in America’s last remaining tallgrass prairie. Discover historic towns, art hubs, and sweeping vistas of golden grasslands. Here’s your guide:
Begin in Manhattan, home to Kansas State University and the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Fuel up and grab coffee at Radina’s Bakehouse before heading south on KS-177.
Key Stops & Highlights
- Blue Earth Plaza. Stop for photos with the iconic "Prairie Passage" sculptures, massive metal bison and prairie grasses near Tuttle Creek Lake.
- Alma, KS. Explore the “City of Native Stone” with its preserved 1800s architecture. Visit Wabaunsee County Historical Museum or browse Alma Art & Frame for local crafts.
- Volland Store. A revitalized 1913 general store turned art gallery. Admire contemporary Midwest-inspired works and snap photos of the rustic prairie backdrop.
- Council Grove. A Santa Fe Trail hub. Walk the Last Chance Store (1857), visit the Kaw Mission, and see the Council Oak Tree, where treaties were signed.
