The World's Best Driving Road Through Portugal's Douro Valley

Winding along the banks of the legendary Douro River through UNESCO World Heritage landscapes, the Estrada Nacional 222 has been officially recognized as the best driving road in the world. This serpentine masterpiece carves through the heart of Portugal's port wine country, delivering 93 heart-stopping bends, terraced vineyards cascading down steep hillsides, and views so spectacular they defy description. From the traditional river town of Peso da Régua to the wine capital of Pinhão and beyond, the N222 offers driving perfection through one of Europe's most beautiful and ancient wine regions.

Key Stops

Peso da Régua - Your journey begins in this historic river town situated on a bend in the Douro. For centuries, Régua was the hub for transporting port wine downriver to Porto on traditional rabelo boats. Start with a visit to the excellent Museu do Douro, dedicated to the wines, history, and culture of the valley. Sample wines at the Solar do Vinho do Porto, run by the Port and Douro Wines Institute, before hitting the road.

N222 Riverside Section - Leaving Régua eastward, the N222 hugs the south bank of the Douro, delivering spectacular views of the valley's sunlit northern slopes. Terraced vineyards—some dating back centuries—climb impossibly steep hillsides. The landscape becomes progressively more dramatic as you travel east.

Quinta do Tedo - Conveniently located right on the N222, this welcoming quinta offers drop-in wine tastings or pre-booked vineyard tours. A perfect first stop to sample the region's famous port wines.

Quinta do Panascal - Another excellent quinta along the route offering fascinating vineyard tours that explain the traditional winemaking methods still used in the Douro.

Pinhão - The crown jewel of the Douro Valley and the heart of port wine production. This quintessential wine town sits where the Pinhão River joins the Douro, surrounded by some of the valley's most prestigious vineyards. Don't miss:

  • Pinhão Railway Station - Famous for its stunning blue-and-white azulejo tiles depicting scenes of the wine harvest
  • Riverfront - Stroll along the water and watch the traditional rabelo boats
  • River Cruises - 1–2 hour cruises depart from the town

Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura - At 640 meters, this summit viewpoint provides arguably the finest panorama in the entire Douro Valley. The sweeping vista across endless terraced vineyards and the winding river below is unforgettable. Writer Miguel Torga called this view "a geological poem."

Vale de Mendiz - A picturesque village perched on a high ridge, accessed via the scenic N322 from Pinhão. The drive here is one of the most spectacular sections of the route, with dramatic views at every turn.

Miradouro da Abelheira - An outstanding viewpoint offering sweeping vistas of the terraced valley landscape.

Heart of the Douro Viewpoint - The section climbing uphill from Pinhão past terraced vineyards to this viewpoint is considered by many to be the single most beautiful stretch of the N222.

Tua - A quiet riverside village popular with hikers. Walk the scenic footpath along the river to the Tua dam, or climb to the dramatic Miradouro de Parambos viewpoint.

Albufeira de Foz Tua - The largest lake in the Alto Douro region, this reservoir created in 2016 offers some of the most spectacular landscapes along the route.

São Salvador do Mundo - A breathtaking viewpoint in the Douro Superior region, where the landscape becomes hotter, drier, and more wild.

Freixo de Numão - Detour to this hamlet for award-winning olive oil from the local cooperative, regional wines and grape spirits, a baroque palace, and remarkable Roman remains including an ancient road still bearing cart ruts from two millennia ago.

Vila Nova de Foz Côa - The eastern terminus for the classic route, built high above the Côa River amid olive and almond groves. Nearby, the Côa Museum showcases the region's remarkable prehistoric rock engravings (another UNESCO World Heritage site) with magnificent views over the confluence of the Côa and Douro rivers.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

The N222 passes through three UNESCO-designated areas:

  • Alto Douro Wine Region - The world's first officially demarcated wine region (1756), recognized for its terraced vineyards
  • Historic Centre of Porto - At the western terminus near Vila Nova de Gaia
  • Prehistoric Rock Art Sites of the Côa Valley - Near the eastern terminus

Driving Tips

  • Fuel Up in Régua - Fill your tank before departing; petrol stations are scarce along the route.
  • Book Quinta Visits - While some quintas accept drop-ins, booking ahead ensures you won't miss the best wine experiences.
  • Purchase the N222 Passport - For €3, document your journey with stamps at various stops along the route—a wonderful souvenir.
  • Harvest Season - September–October brings the grape harvest with vineyards in vibrant autumn colors and the chance to witness traditional picking methods.
  • Spring Beauty - March–May offers mild weather, wildflowers, and the famous almond blossoms in the eastern sections.
  • Narrow Sections - Some mountain roads (like the M633 near Valeira dam) are narrower. Drive cautiously and be prepared to yield.
  • Extend Your Journey - Consider pressing eastward into the rugged Trás-os-Montes region for a 2–3 day adventure through truly wild Portugal.
