A Dramatic Limestone Adventure

Spanning 5 km through Somerset’s Mendip Hills, Cheddar Gorge is England’s deepest river gorge, famed for its towering cliffs, prehistoric caves, and winding roads. This short but spectacular drive offers a mix of natural wonder and history. Here’s your guide:

Begin in the quaint village of Cheddar (famous for its cheese!). Pick up maps at the Cheddar Gorge Visitor Centre and fuel up, narrow roads and limited parking lie ahead.

Key Stops & Highlights

  1. Cliff Road Lookout. Pull over at viewpoints along the B3135 for jaw-dropping photos of the 137-meter limestone cliffs. Watch for feral goats clinging to the slopes!
  2. Black Rock Wildlife Reserve. Walk through ancient woodland and spot peregrine falcons or dormice.
  3. The Pinnacles. Hike the Cliff Top Walk (4 km loop) for panoramic views of the gorge and Somerset Levels.
  4. Gough’s Cave & Cheddar Man. Explore the caverns where Britain’s oldest complete skeleton (9,000-year-old Cheddar Man) was found. Tour the illuminated caves and taste authentic Cheddar cheese at the onsite shop.
  5. Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company. Tour the working dairy and sample cheese made with local milk.

The drive officially ends where the gorge road meets the village but extend your trip to nearby Wells (England’s smallest city) or Glastonbury Tor (16 km away).

Tips for the Drive

  • Road Conditions: Narrow, winding, and steep drive slowly (especially in rain). Cyclists frequent the route.
  • Parking: Use paid lots in Cheddar Village; free spots are scarce.
  • Entry Fees: Cave tours and attractions require tickets (book online).
  • Season: Spring (wildflowers) or autumn (fewer crowds). Avoid summer weekends if possible.
